A Mother's Salt Intake Could Be Key to Prenatal Kidney Development

A new animal study from Europe has drawn an association between pregnant mothers' sodium intake and their newborn's kidney development. Among the most significant aspects of the study's findings is that either too much or too little salt during pregnancy had an adverse effect on the prenatal development of the offspring's kidneys. The consequence of such disruption can lead to high blood pressure in later years.

These are the conclusions reached in the study, "Both High and Low Maternal Salt Intake in Pregnancy Alters Kidney Development in the Offspring," conducted byNadezda Koleganova, Grzegorz Piecha, Annett Müller, Monika Weckbach, Peter Schirmacher, and Marie-Luise Gross-Weissmann, Eberhard Ritz and Luis Eduardo Becker, all with the University of Heidelberg in Heidelberg, DE; and Jens Randel Nyengaard of the University of Aarhus, Aarhus, DK. Their study is published in the online edition of the American Journal of Physiology--Renal Physiology.

Moms Pro Nutrition, Moms Pro TSEK

MALOLOS CITY, Bulacan/ANGELES CITY, Pampanga, Philippines — Marking July as a campaign season for maternal and child health, local governments in Central Luzon kicked off Nutrition Month Tuesday with breastfeeding and good nutrition advocacy programs in Bulacan and Pampanga.

Bulacan Governor Wilhelmino M. Sy Alvarado rallied around the Department of Health’s (DoH’s) theme “Isulong ang Breastfeeding: Tama, Sapat at EKslusibo (TSEK)” for the occasion centered at the Bulacan Capitol Gymnasium.

“We aim to uplift the awareness of all the sectors of the society particularly the Bulakenyo mothers about the importance of breastfeeding for the nutrition and development of each child. Aside from that, we also prepared various programs to assure the nourishment of Bulakenyo children,” said Alvarado.

Among the activities scheduled for this month-long celebration are forum and seminars such as the symposium dubbed as “Karangalan ng Kababaihan sa Programa ng Nutrisyon;” the training for “Lingkod Lingap sa Nayon” and “Mother Leaders;” the “Information Forum on Breastfeeding;” and the forum/discussion about the proper caring for cancer patients.

Moreover, there will be nutrition parades, food festival, information forum and cooking contest to be held in the different schools from the cities and municipalities province-wide.

In Pampanga, the Angeles City Nutrition Office (CNO) also launched the breastfeeding program and other advocacy activities.

The event started with a float parade participated by daycare students in different barangays of the city. Each participating daycare school presented nutrition themes as daycare students waved from floats decorated by vegetables and fruits.

Also following the theme TSEK, the campaign aims to arm parents, especially mothers of the importance and the benefits of breastfeeding.
