The internet is aflutter with the good news: Singer Beyonce Knowles and her rapper husband Jay-Z are going to be parents….which means another celebrity baby is on the way!The 29-year-old singer was apparently surprised by the news that she is pregnant. Although she had wanted to complete another album before becoming a mom, she is excited that she’s in her first trimester of pregnancy, US Weekly reports. And Famecrawler is certain she’ll make a great mother.
29-year-old Beyonce and her 40-year-old husband Jay-Z (whose real name is Shawn Carter) have been married since 2009. Us Weekly reports that Jay-Z was pushing for them to start a family sooner rather than later.
I’m sure the paparazzi are excited that they’ll know have another celebrity baby to write about. And it’s not just the media that makes a fuss over celebrity pregnancies and babies. Regular moms are enthralled by celebrity moms and babies too. Why is that?
Putting on my pop-psychologist hat, I’d say that parenthood makes celebrities seem more like the rest of us. Or perhaps it adds a touch of glamour to our mundane lives as parents.
As I’ve written before at Strollerderby, as a culture, we’re obsessed with celebrity moms (and moms-to-be). It’s not just their post-baby bodies that fascinate us. It’s their glamorous lifestyles. They attend movie premieres while pregnant, romp on the beach in the south of France and seem to always have their adorable, perfectly behaved kids in tow.
Do we just want to live vicariously through glamorous, rich couples like Beyonce and Jay-Z? Why do you think we care about celebrity moms and moms-to-be?
